Like most business owners you want to increase sales. I know, I have run my own businesses for 10 years now, its the Holy Grail.
Way back when I first started my business, I saw a number of companies start from nothing and get 1000’s of customers. It made me think that there must be a process that can be built to replicate this.
I decided I wanted to create a Lead Machine. Whats a Lead Machine I hear you ask? A Lead Machine is an imaginary machine where you put money in one end, turn the handle and Sales Leads or customers come out the other end, or better still you don’t put in money and sales leads still come out every day.
I spent about 7 years experimenting with the aim to have a perpetual flow of qualified prospects knocking at my door.
It took me about 2 years to really understand what worked, I did a lot of experimentation. I tried railway billboards, I sent out over 150,000 postcards in the mail, I tried seminars, I cold called, magazine advertising, Newspapers, telemarketers, I built vendor relationships and referral programs, Im sure I did a few more I can’t even remember now.
Many of these had positive return on investment (the postcards were consistently good) but they took up a lot of time and sometimes you didn’t get leads or a measurable result for 1-3 months. Way too slow and uncertain.
Then I found Paid Search Marketing. This was around 2002 when Adwords first entered Australia.
In my opinion there is no guaranteed best way to promote a business. The best thing to do is to experiment with your offer and test it until you have found a better way to market and then to keep on testing until you find something better and this process continues forever.
As I mentioned, this process can take 3-6 months in the offline world, sometimes you never really know what was successful. In the online world using Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing or Microsoft Adcentre you can create an experiment this afternoon and you can test it against a dozen other experiments at the same time and know which one is working the best by the end of the week.
You can generate leads today using Search Marketing and measure the return on investment in real time.
But, this is only part of the magic. There is a way in which you can get leads without paying.
Search Engine Optimisation is the process in which you fine tune your Website so that the Search Engines believe that it is the most relevant website for any particular topic and they rank you at the top of the search results.
Being on the front page of the search results for your chosen topic drives massive traffic (I know, I have had had numerous sites with >100 search terms at the top and the leads are great)
The only problem is its a long term process. Without doing something shady, Search Engine Optimization takes months or sometimes even a year to start paying dividends, but this same inertia also has an advantage. Usually once it starts, it keeps on going for a long time.
So what as a business owner do you do?
Do what I did, start with Paid Search Marketing using Google Adwords and at the same time fine tune your website to be optimised for the Search Topics you wish to compete with.
